Timeline needs easier way to select traces

Because sometimes sensor traces can be tightly overlaid, a desire has been expressed for a legend, possibly where rolling over the legend entries causes highlights of the corresponding trace. This requirement is not fulfilled by the expanded timeline since there is still a need for overlaid traces. This may be combined with work to convert timeline to a canvas (see #1875).
