Why do we require two tildes to strike thru?

I see according to the spec, double tildes are required

Any opposition to supporting one-tilde strike thru?

I can confirm py-gfm does not support the single-tilde syntax even though GFM does. This is a bit of a pain to correctly handle through the Markdown library. I added this to the list of known discrepancies.
