Unable to build with Go 1.22

While working on #285, I notice that this project cannot be built with Go 1.22, so I had to install Go 1.21 to make any progress.

I think a serious overhaul of dependencies in this project is required to fix this issue. That will also close a lot of reported vulnerabilities.

When #359 is merged, there should be pull requests submitted for that by Dependabot.

Unfortunately it looks like there are some sizeable kubebuilder breaking changes that will require much more effort to get dependancies up to date. I'm working on finding some time/help with this effort.
